Google AI Max Is Changing Search Ads

Google is giving artificial intelligence a bigger role in Search campaigns. Here’s what that means for targeting, ad copy, landing pages, and the businesses paying for those clicks.

Google Ads is changing again

More AI. More Automation. More Reason to Pay Attention.

Google Ads has never exactly been known for standing still.

Now, another significant change is happening.

Google is expanding AI Max for Search campaigns, a collection of AI-powered features designed to give Google more flexibility in determining which searches your ads can appear for, how your advertising message is customized, and which landing page someone may see after clicking.

AI

What's happening in September 2026?

Google says Search campaigns currently using text customization or the campaign-level broad match setting are being transitioned into AI Max beginning this month. The automatic transition for campaigns using Dynamic Search Ads is currently scheduled for February 2027.

For business owners, the important question isn't simply: “Is Google using more AI?”

It's: “What does Google's increased use of AI mean for the money I'm spending on advertising?”

The basics

What Is AI Max for Google Search Campaigns?

Traditionally, keywords have been one of the foundations of Google Search advertising.

An HVAC company, for example, might target searches such as “HVAC company near me,” “AC repair,” or “emergency HVAC service.”

Traditional keyword-style search
Different words. Potentially similar customer intent.

Keywords aren't disappearing.

But AI Max gives Google additional ways to identify potentially relevant searches beyond relying exclusively on the keywords an advertiser manually entered.

Think of the new Search process like this:

Step 1 Your Keywords, Website & Ads
Step 2 Google AI Interprets Intent
Step 3 A Potential Customer Sees Your Ad

The goal is to help advertisers capture demand that might not fit perfectly into a manually created keyword list.

For businesses, that creates opportunity.

It also creates something else: a greater need to understand exactly what your campaigns are doing.

Google Can Also Help Create Your Ad Copy

AI Max isn't only about which searches can trigger an advertisement.

One of its features is text customization, previously known as Automatically Created Assets.

Google can use context from:

Your domain
Your landing pages
Existing advertisements
Keywords in the ad group
Campaign assets
Customer search intent
Same company. Same campaign. Different search intent. Potentially different messaging.
Beyond the advertisement

Google May Also Choose a Different Landing Page

With Final URL expansion, Google can select a page on your website that it determines is more relevant to a person's search instead of always sending users to the advertiser's original landing page.

Imagine an HVAC company with separate pages for:

AC Repair
Heating Repair
Emergency HVAC Service
Maintenance
Ductless Systems
System Installation

If someone searches specifically for ductless AC repair, Google may determine that the ductless systems page is more relevant than a general HVAC landing page.

That can create a better user experience—but advertisers still need to monitor where Google is actually sending their paid traffic.

Opportunity vs. oversight

So, Is AI Max Good or Bad?

The answer isn't as simple as either one.

The Opportunity

Reach relevant searches that may have been missed.
Adapt messaging around different customer intent.
Direct visitors toward more relevant pages.
Use additional signals to identify potential customers.

What Needs Attention

Lead quality—not only lead volume.
Accurate conversion data.
AI-generated ad copy.
Landing-page traffic.
Cost per qualified lead.
The signal behind the AI

Conversion Tracking Matters More Than Ever

Google Ads campaigns aren't valuable simply because they generate clicks—or even because the dashboard reports a high number of conversions.

Did those conversions actually turn into qualified business opportunities?

01 Ad Click
02 Call or Form
03 Qualified Lead
04 Real Opportunity

If campaign optimization is based on signals that don't reflect actual business value, more automation isn't going to fix the problem.

Your AI Max checklist

What Should Businesses Be Watching?

Search Terms

Review the actual searches people type and identify irrelevant traffic, buying intent, and new opportunities.

Lead Quality

More leads don't automatically mean better results. Track which leads become real business opportunities.

Conversion Tracking

Make sure calls, forms, appointments, and other valuable customer actions are being measured accurately.

Aa

AI-Generated Copy

Review automatically generated headlines and descriptions to ensure they represent the business correctly.

Landing Pages

Pay attention to which website pages receive paid traffic and whether those pages offer the right customer experience.

$

Cost Per Qualified Lead

Go beyond cost per conversion and evaluate what you're paying for opportunities that can actually become customers.

The bigger shift

Google Ads Is Becoming Less About Keywords Alone

Traditional mindset

“Which keywords should we bid on?”

Keywords, bids, ads, and manual targeting were often the central focus of Search campaign management.

AI-driven mindset

“Are we giving Google the right information?”

Website quality, landing pages, conversion data, customer behavior, search terms, and campaign structure increasingly work together.

The REALTOP takeaway More automation doesn't eliminate campaign management. It changes what good campaign management looks like.
Strategy still matters

More Automation Still Requires Oversight

There is a temptation with every new AI advertising tool to assume that automation eventually eliminates the need for active campaign management.

But giving an advertising platform more freedom doesn't eliminate strategy.

It changes where the strategy needs to happen.

What counts as a valuable conversion?
Which leads are actually qualified?
Which searches are consuming budget?
Which services should be promoted?
Which landing pages deserve traffic?
Does the generated messaging reflect the brand?
